My Privilege

Well, there is a lot of talk nowadays about how privileged some people are over others due to several factors including the color of your skin. First of all, what is privilege? Miriam-Webster Dictionary defines it as, ":a right or immunity granted as a peculiar benefit, advantage, or favor: prerogative." Now, I am just a simple minded country boy that has grown up in Arkansas and Oklahoma, but from what I can tell, no two people have the same privileges in life. Some folk are good looking, some are ugly; some are smart and some are ignorant; some are rich and some are poor; some are one color and some are another; some have common sense and critical thinking skills and some can't find their way out of a paper sack without someone telling them the way. Maybe some we would consider to be over privileged and some to be under privileged.

So, we all have privileges. Some have more than others, and some have more than they realize. One thing we can't afford to do is to get caught up in what we don't have! Because when we are caught up in what we don't have, we will never do anything with what we do have. I really think that it comes down to that; what are you going to do with the privilege you DO have? I promise you that you won't have to look far to find someone who was dealt a much more harsh hand in life than you, but they took what privilege they did have, instead of focusing on all the privilege they didn't have, and built something great, even magnificent.

Maybe there is a reason that you don't have the same privileges that I have. Maybe you were meant to be something more than you ever imagined, and you were dealt the very privileges you needed to become the person you need to be for such a time as this! You see the environment, circumstances, heartaches, and experiences of our lives don't have to break us down, they can be used to build us up. Those are the things that make us unique and prepare us for our unique place in life. Just because your Dad was an alcoholic does not mean that is your destiny! Take that experience and be determined not to repeat that in your generation. You can choose to wear that like a millstone around your neck or make it a stone of determination in your foundation and refuse to follow that path. God gave you creative ability, and if you will ask Him, He will give you the guidance and strength you need to build a strong house on a strong foundation.

I was privileged to have a loving Mom and Dad that loved each other and all us kids, even when we were not very lovable. I was privileged to have older brothers that could pass down their cloths to me and my twin brother when they outgrew them. I was privileged to have a Mom that could make a meal out of just about anything. There were times when all the money they could count on coming in was about $100 a month, but God provided! I was privileged to be brought up in a Christian home where I was taught about a Savior that loved me more than His own life. I was privileged to receive an education from public schools. I was privileged to go to college for one year at a Bible college, because there was a bunch of church folks that believed in me and paid for the first semester. I was privileged to pay for the second semester with a loan that I paid on for the next five or six years. I was privileged to meet my wife at that school. I was privileged to work hard at several different general labor jobs and try to fulfill God's call to ministry for several years. During that time I was blessed with the privilege of having three children to love and support. I was privileged to take on about $60,000.00 in debt going back to school while working full-time (10-12 hrs/day). I am privileged to have a job to go to everyday to continue to work on repaying those student loans, a mortgage, and all the other bills that come along with it. I am privileged to be an American. There are a lot of privileges that I did not have, and the times that I have been focused on that have been some of the most miserable and unproductive times of my life.

Take your God given privilege and become the person that God dreams you will be. Join Him in His dream for you. There are no limits to what God can do with a man, woman, boy, or girl that is fully surrendered to Him! Many times we defeat ourselves by looking at everyone else's privileges and bemoaning our lack of what they have. You were not called to be that person. Be who you were called and created to be. God has equipped you with the privilege you need to start the journey. Remember this, "(5) Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:  (6)  Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:  (7)  But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:  (8)  And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.  (9)  Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:" -Philippians 2:5-9 The greatest man that ever lived, lived to serve. If we could just learn to love God and love others, our lives would be so much more fulfilling, and the world would be a much more pleasant place to live.
